Product Description What's the difference between a cop and Kevin Maher? Kevin doesn't have a badge. And he doesn't play by the rules. Cop Without A Badge tracks confidential informant Kevin Maher as he helps the NYPD, the FBI, and many other law enforcement agencies solve cases that range from robbery to extortion to homicide. In the process, Kevin becomes the highest paid CI the DEA ever had. But Kevin's motives are more complicated than simply money. Having been arrested for Grand Theft Auto at the age of sixteen, his felony conviction prevents him from being what he always wanted to be: a police officer. So now he's out to prove to himself he truly is what he could've been. A cop. Even without a badge. Kevin Maher was 39 years old and living in New Jersey in 1996 when Cop Without A Badge was first published. Maher now works as a private investigator in the state of California.

entertaining read June 6, 2010 edelweiss 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Cop Without a Badge is an easy read that someone can read through in less than a week. It tells of a interesting life lived by Kevin Maher. While it seems too out there to be true, true or not it keeps your attention and is definitely a page turner. I read some previous reviews and people are angry about the book not being about Danielle from RHONJ. Guess what, the publisher, author, nor Kevin Maher never advertised is as such, the subtitle is "The Extraordinary Undercover Life Of Kevin Maher." If you are just interested in the book for the information on Danielle, I wouldn't purchase the book. But if you are interested in an entertaining story and are interested in crime history in the NJ/NYC area, it is definitely a book for you. Mr. Maher is a gentleman you either love or hate throughout the novel. You are either rooting for him to get clean, sober, and happy or get caught for the crimes he is commiting while being an undercover informant. Mr. Kipps did a good job of intertwining many different stories into chronological order so it was easy to follow. By no means is this book a Ulysses or Moby-Dick, nor should readers expect it to be this masterpiece just because it was brought up on a TV show. It is meant to entertain you, note the word entertain, and if there are some embellishments here and there, who cares!
Great Intriguing read!!! January 27, 2010 R. Theobald 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Couldn't put this book down & with children i don't get much time to read and I'm not a big reader to begin with, but I became addicted to this book and couldn't wait to see what else happened. For those wanting to know about "Beverly Staub" (RHONJ), no of course the book isn't going to be all about her. I was however diappointed that amazon delayed the issuance of this book and cancelled pre-orders. My husband read the book too and loved it, we both loved the Sopranos and are big drag racing/gearheads anyway so that was a plus!

You never know what's next for Kevin Maher in 'Cop Without a Badge'. If you are interested in an entertaining story about crime in the New York City area, it is definitely a great book for you. The only thing I really did not like was the beginning. After 2 Grand theft auto's and getting off lucky, you would think he would stop his life of crime. He continues to be a delinquint until an unfortunate event happens. I was always looking forward of what was to happen next. It was very high action because everytime you would flip a page it turned into another unbelieveable scene. It also had a great setting, New York City, where the crime rate is very high. A real page turner.

I enjoyed this book. After watching Housewives of New York and hearing about the book on the program, I was curious about it. It turned out to be a very interesting book. Easy reading, but intriguing.
Great read. June 20, 2009 California Girl (Northern California) 14 out of 28 found this review helpful
Kevin Maher is my friend. No one was more surprised than he was about the sudden renewed interest in Cop Without a Badge. He had never seen any of the housewives shows until old friends started calling him after his book showed up on the show. He has not seen or heard from Beverly/Danielle since they split up. The books that are on sale through Amazon are used copies with inflated prices due to the popularity of the RHONJ show and it should be ridiculously obvious he and his coauthor don't make a penny off of the sale of used books by private parties. Due to the renewed interest, however, the book is being reissued and will be out within a couple of weeks (at a regular book price) and of course Kevin and Charlie will profit from those sales. (BTW, the reissuing of the book was already being negotiated BEFORE Kevin was ever aware of this housewives show. The publicity generated for the book due to Beverly/Danielle's sordid past becoming a central storyline of the RHONJ show, pushed that deal through nicely.) Beverly/Danielle has nothing to do with it and I'd bet she's not thrilled that she helped to benefit Kevin in any way. I would also guess there may be a lot of he said/she said in the next few weeks, especially after the RHONJ have their reunion show. All that aside, I have the book (no, it's not for sale). It is a great read for people who like true crime stories, detective stories, etc. Some people just seem to have very interesting lives with extraordinary and unusual things happening to them and Kevin's one of those guys. Beverly/Danielle is just another chapter in Kevin Maher's very exciting and interesting life story.
